I Don't Go Anywhere Special
It's baseball season again! I have two kiddos on three teams this Spring and Summer.
All of those years playing softball as a kid are paying off because I actually have an idea of what’s going on. Woot!
Last month, as I was shopping for items for the Spring 2019 Style Guide, I kept having this thought...
But, I'm just going to be sitting by the baseball diamond. I don't need anything special.
Have you ever had that thought? “I don't need anything cute to wear because I'm just going to be...with my kids...working in my boring office...watching soccer...or insert place here…”
That is an outwardly focused thought. You're having it because you are mistakenly believing that you are getting dressed for OTHER PEOPLE. That you have to fit into a certain box called “WORK” or “CASUAL” that was defined by the way other women are dressing at those places. You wear polyester pants and cardigan twinsets at work because that’s what Susan is wearing and she seems to be doing ok. You show up at PTO meetings wearing workout clothes because that’s what everyone else is doing.
You're selling yourself short.
Let’s flip this on it’s head. What if you get dressed for YOU and YOU get to decide what to wear when you show up at the Rookie Ball field (that’s what they call Coach Pitch Baseball here!) or the office? How would that feel?
What if we lifted the pressure to be like everyone else?
I know this sounds crazy coming from a trends-focused personal stylist. But, believe me! Having great personal style is not just about looking a certain way. When I speak to groups, clean out closets, or coach women in my programs, we ALWAYS start by answering the question, “How do I want to feel?” How would you answer that question?
Confident. Pulled-together. Powerful. Comfortable. Cute. ???
I believe that you deserve to show up everywhere you go looking your best. You deserve to have a wardrobe full of clothes that highlight your personal style (yes, you have one) and suit your lifestyle. You deserve to have a system for getting dressed quickly and easily. You deserve to feel incredible FOR YOURSELF every day.
I'm not saying that you can never wear something just for comfort's sake or that you need to freeze to be fashionable. But, I AM saying that you can wear whatever the heck you want to on the sidelines of your kid's game or in the office. It’s like my Dad always said, just because everyone else is doing something doesn't mean that you have to do it too. You have permission to play bigger.
I want you to show up in this world genuinely and professionally, no matter what your job is in life.
If you're feeling like you've lost who you are and you don't even know what the best "professional" version of you would wear, I can help! I just wrote a blog post about this topic of getting help, and I'd love for you to read it. CLICK HERE.
